Week 01

Day 01 (20th October 2014)

We were brought around and introduced to several other staffs, and got to know the area. We then went to a rental warehouse (Holzmueller Productions), where we got to know of various things, like the different lights and even got to see a live demo of a certain light. It was rather an eye opener.

Day 02 (21st October 2014)

We started helping out in a trailer, fixing beltpacks to the tables, which involved drilling the screws. We then laid out the cables and packed them neatly into the cable cases as well as stapling some loose cables beneath the tables. One of the cables had to be stripped as we forgot to label the cables. After stripping it, we managed to test out which was the right cable, by causing a short on one end of it. It was our first time handling the drill, the staplegun, figuring out how the cables should be laid, and also testing the cable, which was a rather interesting and fun learning experience.

Day 03 (22nd October 2014)

Today's a rather busy day. I started the day by cutting velcro pieces to secure the cables in position. After which, I was taught to connect the right wires to the rightful places, which involved stripping the wires. This was rather time consuming, straining to the eyes as the wires were really tiny, and challenging at the same time.

Day 04 (23rd October 2014)

It's the fourth day of the week, and it's a pretty packed day. We had to finish up the wiring, and attend a talk (SF Cutters Oct 23 Filmmakers Maureen Gosling & Josh Feldman), which was held at Adobe Systems! How cool was that! So, after finishing up the wiring, we had to test the intercom together with the camera. If it doesn't work, then one of he wiring is either loose or wired incorrectly. We encountered this problem, and had to inspect the wires, which turns out in this case, to be a loose wire. We then went to attend a talk (SF Cutters, after having our scrumptious dinner. The speeches given by speakers, Maureen Gosling, and Josh Feldman were pretty interesting, in particular, Josh Feldman's speech. I really enjoyed the the speech by him, as there were many tips and skills which he explained, with regards to the various softwares, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Audition, as well as some other softwares. It was an awesome experience to be able to listen to these wonderful people. Although it was a rather packed day, I really love everything we did today. Reason being? Well, we managed to perfect our skills with the wiring, and that was a skill which would be important in our daily lives. Furthermore, we learnt a lot from the talk given by the professionals. So all in all, I would say today's a pretty fruitful day!

Day 05 (24th October 2014)

Today marks the end of our first week of internship in San Francisco! So to start off, we were suppose to have a shoot today which involved a green screen, but it was postponed due to the testing of the fire alarm. So, we went back to the trailer to do some work there. I had a chance to learn from my peers on how to desolder a XLR.

After which, I was tasked to lay some cat6 ethernet cables, which didn't take much time. We were also taught how to make a ethernet cables and the wiring in it. Moving on, we we also taught to make a BNC cable straight from a coaxial cable. It was not difficult and I got the hang of it after making a few of it. There were many steps in making one, though. We had many tools in order to make a bnc cable, tools such as the crimper, bnc cutter and a bnc wire stripper. For me, the fun part was getting to know how each of these tool works, and eventually getting a nice, workable bnc cable. After all is done, there was also a small machine to test both the bnc and the ethernet cable, if it was working perfectly.

So, that's pretty much everything about this week. It has been a pretty long and exhausting week. However, in just this one week, I've learnt lots of things together with my peers, and I believe more will come in the future. So, on this note, I look forward to all the fun, interesting and awesome things and experiences which we will be doing in the next few weeks!
